My Booga Bag

I finally completed my first knitting project since starting classes 6 weeks ago. I'm very proud of my felted purse and haven't decided whether to keep it or give it as a gift. If you are a knitter, here is a link to the pattern:

Thankful Thursday, June 25, 2009

This week I have discovered that I don't do well without a vehicle. DH's truck is having some much needed body work done, so we only have one vehicle. This week has been a real struggle for me. I haven't been able to do my errands, visit family or visit friends. I know how blessed we are to have two vehicles, when some families have only one car or no mode of transporation at all. That leads to one of many things I'm thankful for today...two vehicles for our family. I'm also thankful that my in-laws are allowing us to use one of their vehicles so that dh can attend a meeting tonight while I go to knitting class.

Our family is so blessed in so many ways. I can't imagine what some families go through as they struggle to feed and clothe their children or fight for health care benefits for a sick child. It makes me so sad and angry, but yet leads me to be more grateful for all that I have...I am thankful for healthy children who are growing and learning each and every day, for the roof over our heads and that we have food on our table each day.

I'm thankful that I've gotten back in touch with a few of my cousins and old friends thanks to facebook.

I'm also thankful for my husband, who is patient with me.

Menu Plan Monday, June 22, 2009

Happy Summer! It has finally arrived! We followed last week's menu pretty closely. The Weeknight Lasagna Toss is a keeper. We all loved it! I cut down the green pepper to only 1/2 of 1 pepper and it was just right. We also liked the Sweet and Sour Meatball Skewers. They were something different on the grill.

Lemon Meringue Pie

Lemon Meringue Pie

1 package Jello lemon flavored pudding Pie filling (cook and serve)
1/2 cup sugar
2¼ cup water
2 egg yolks
1 baked 9 pie shell;cooled

3 egg whites
5 tablespoons sugar

Combine pie filling mix, 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup of water in saucepan. Blend in egg yolks and remaining water. Cook and stir over medium heat stirring constantly with a whisk ,until mixture comes to a full bubbling boil.
Remove from heat. Cool 5 minutes, stirring twice. Pour into pie shell.

Beat egg whites with an electric mixer until foamy throughout. Gradually beat in 5 tablespoons sugar and continue beating until mixture forms stiff peaks. Spread over pie filling. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes or until meringue is delicately brown. Cool at least 4 hours before cutting.


Garage Sale!

On Saturday, we held a garage sale. As dh says, "We have more stuff than two people should be allowed to own." We cleared out the attic and loaded up the garage. Sadly, we have more to put out. Soooo...we're opening up the garage again next Saturday to sell the rest of the items we had no room for yesterday. We had a lot of great shoppers, met some neighbors that we didn't know and made a bit of money in the process. These photos were taken mid-day.

Some tips~

  • price everything
  • put out clean items~no one wants to buy dirty things
  • use lots of signs has great printable signs.
  • advertise~in the paper and on-line
  • put batteries in battery operated toys. You can ask for more money and shoppers are more likely to buy if they can see how it works.
  • merchandise like items together
  • bag/box like items together and sell for one price...i.e. 12 matchbox cars for 1 dollar

Jeff and Tina's Wedding

We attended a family friend's wedding on Saturday night. I loved her color scheme of orange and yellow. It was so pretty and felt like summer. The wedding was held in an open air historic dance hall at a local park. Here are some photos from the wedding:

It's my first full week of summer vacation and I'm so thrilled about that! Our goal this week it to eat at home every night this week. On Saturday, we're having a garage sale. I think we'll order in after that event and just enjoy some down time after the prep work of all week.

Jewelry Party Desserts and More

On Friday evening, I hostessed a Lia Sophia jewelry show. It was a good time
and the hostess benefits are awesome! If you have an opportunity to hostess a party, do so. If you are local please contact me and I'll help you book a show with Debbie. I just wanted to share my goodies:
Death by Chocolate

1 devil's food cake, baked in a 13x9 pan, cooled and cubed

1 large chocolate instant pudding, prepared with 3 cups milk

1 tub of cool whip lite

2 Heath Bars, chopped

In a clear glass or trifle bowl, layer ingredients using 1/2 of the cake, then 1/2 of the pudding, 1/2 of the cool whip and half of the candy bar. Repeat one time for a regular size trifle bowl ending with the chopped candy bar on top. Chill for a few hours before serving. Enjoy!

Angel Lush

1 can (20 oz.) DOLE Crushed Pineapple in Juice, undrained
1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding
1 cup thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping
1 pkg. (10 oz.) round angel food cake, cut into 3 layers
10 small fresh strawberries

Mix pineapple and dry pudding mix. Gently stir in cool whip.
Stack cake layers on plate, spreading pudding mixture between layers and on top of cake.
Refrigerate 1 hour. Top with berries.
I made my own angel food cake and left out the berries because a friend is allergic to strawberries.

Nibbler Tray

A friend at Magical Holiday Home suggested this for my party. Thanks Kim!

I couldn't find skinny bread sticks, so I made regular breadsticks. The nibbles included mozzarella balls, marinated artichokes, balsamic marinated mushrooms, and wine marinated olives. The tray was well received. I like that it was different from the usual crackers and cheeseball.

Italian Cookies

I made these cookies today. They remind me of the cookies we used to make with my Nana, Mom, Aunts and Cousins at Christmas time when I was a girl. I miss those times together in Nana's kitchen.

Italian Cookies

1/2 pound butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
6 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla or anise extract
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder

3-3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
5 to 6 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Flaked coconut or assorted sprinkles


In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and extract. Combine flour and baking powder; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 9-11 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. For icing, in a small bowl, combine the confectioners' sugar, milk and vanilla until smooth. Dip cookies, allowing excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper; decorate as desired. Let stand until set. Yield: 7 dozen. Enjoy!


Show and Tell Friday, June 5, 2009

I thought I would share some of the plants in my gardens and yard. I love our backyard during the spring and summer months because it becomes so private and intimate in the middle of our busy city neighborhood.

These are our hostas and my book fairy on the shaded side of the house. I love the contrast of the bright green and white against the dark brick of the house.

These are the flowers of the white bleeding heart plant in the bed by the garage. The rounded leaves are from the black eyed susans beside it.

There are actually two plants here. You can see the blooms on the chives, as well as the bright leaves of Lemon Balm in our herb garden.


I can't remember the name of this plant. Anyone? This is a cluster of three plants.

One of our first Stella D'Oro daylily plants to bloom.

The Last Day of School

Today is the last day of school for ds. He has officially passed 4th grade and will begin fifth grade in August. Congratulations Scoochie on your straight A's and making the Honor Roll!
We're very proud of our son!

Fun in the Sun Gift Bucket

This is the gift bucket I made as a thank you gift for the TSS, Ms. Diana, in my classroom. She's a wonderful woman and I'm glad to call her a friend. I filled a sand bucket from the dollar tree with a summer plastic "glass", Crystal Light Lemonade, flower shaped reusable ice cubes, a search and find puzzle book, a pack of pens and a snack size bag of Sun Chips. Cute and simple for about ten dollars.
